How the True Jesus Church Newcastle Transformed 25,000 sq ft into a National Headquarters

How a congregation found its true home

When the True Jesus Church transformed a long-empty office building near Newcastle into a 25,000 sq ft national HQ and local church, their clear vision was to create lasting spaces for the next 30 years and more. The project challenged budgets, timelines and logistics, and revealed how crucial getting the furniture right would be.

A growing congregation

The True Jesus Church has been part of the Newcastle community for decades. With around 800 members, its Newcastle Church congregation at Shieldfield is the largest in the UK. Their original building, now 35 years old, had long been struggling to keep up with the congregation's expansion. Families were growing in numbers, the activities were expanding, and the space simply was not big enough.

The answer came in 2023 when the church purchased a vacant commercial building in Cramlington, just north of Newcastle. Originally built as a speculative office in 2008 and never occupied, it had sat empty for years. It offered something the church had never had before: 25,000 square feet across three floors, which could be tailored entirely to their needs.

The brief was to create a national HQ that would also become a second place of worship just north of Newcastle, with a conference room and training facilities for 200, a Chapel, a dining hall with capacity for 420, classrooms for the children's Saturday religious education, a library, open plan administrative office space and on-site sleeping accommodation for members who travel from as far north as Elgin and as far south as Portsmouth, even from Europe and the rest of the World.

Planning permission for change of use was secured in 2023. A building team of volunteers was formed in the summer of 2024. Design sign-off followed in March 2025. By December 2025, the building had been refurbished and was ready for commissioning. It was a tight schedule that left little room for error.

Challenge: 25,000 sq ft of flexibility

With a project of this scale, the furniture and fittings were always going to be a significant decision. The church had a stockpile of chairs from a former affiliated venue; they were metal-framed, leather-cushioned, and had been sitting in members' garages for the best part of seven years. A feasibility review concluded they were not fit for purpose.
They were clunky and couldn't be stacked efficiently. We needed furniture that could transform the dining hall quickly. One day, seating 420 people for a meal, the next cleared for a wedding or seminar event. Flexibility wasn't just desirable, it was essential”.
The financial stakes were high, this was the church’s largest-ever furniture investment. The team agreed it should not be an afterthought, ring-fencing the FF&E budget instead of leaving it to whatever was left after construction.
“Our church in Shieldfield has furniture that has lasted over 30 years, and people still comment on its quality and durability. Whatever we bought for this building needed to do the same. We didn't want to cut corners and find ourselves replacing everything in five years”.

Solution: building for the congregation, not just the space

The team found AJ Products while searching online for durable, stackable dining tables that were a step up from standard laminate. They reached out to Sophie on the AJ Products sales team, sending over the architectural drawings and a detailed quantity schedule, and the process of matching products to spaces began.

The order expanded beyond the dining hall, which required six-seater tables and stackable chairs for 420. AJ Products also provided classroom furniture for the children's Saturday education programme, library furnishings, and desks and chairs for an eight-person open plan office. For the conference room, seating at least 200, AJ Products supplied the chairs; the tables were sourced separately to fit a specific design preference.

It wasn’t something we had ever spent anything like this on as an organisation. But when it was presented to the building team and the board of trustees, it was very clear: the furniture helps to realise what we want to do with the space. Importantly, it sets the tone for everything we do”.
The project faced complications. Delays pushed furniture delivery from August to October, incurring storage costs and straining installation timelines. A large lorry made deliveries over two days, but the fit-out wasn't yet fully complete. Managing the equipment and extensive packaging fell to a small site team and volunteers.

There was also an unforeseen issue with the dining tables. Once in situ, it became clear they would need additional strengthening support. AJ Products were very responsive and quickly arranged for the supporting crossbeams to be fitted on site. The tables are now solid, stable and built for the long term.

Throughout these challenges, AJ Products' support remained consistent. Sophie checked in regularly on timescales and helped revise the order on at least three or four occasions as requirements evolved. Additional items ordered later through the website arrived exactly as expected.
We experienced both sides of the service. Hands-on account management and straightforward online ordering, both worked well. It's a small team, which helps. You get a name, you build a relationship, and you're not left waiting for someone to respond to an email”.

A ten out of ten outcome

The building held its first test event in April 2026, a gathering of 200+ church members using the Chapel, dining hall and classrooms. The feedback was immediate and clear.

The reaction has been one of genuine excitement. When the congregation walked into these spaces and saw the quality of what had been created, particularly the young families with children, you could see it. No one has looked at anything and thought it looked cheap. Everyone has simply said: this furniture is quality.”
With the new facilities in place, the dining hall now seats 420 for a regular Saturday (Sabbath) meal and can be reconfigured for larger events. The children's classrooms will be in use every weekend. The conference room accommodates 200 for seminars and training. After nearly a decade of anticipation, the congregation finally has the space it has been waiting for.

For project manager Jason Liu, the experience provided a broader lesson. Ring-fencing the FF&E budget, he says, should be standard practice, not an afterthought. The furniture and finishes are what people actually use and experience every day. Prioritising them from the outset distinguishes a space that truly works from one that merely functions.

The church is already looking at future projects. And AJ Products will be on the list of potential suppliers.
AJ Products deserves a ten out of ten. What we’ve created together is absolutely what we set out to achieve”.
