A sustainability policy with high ambitions

Our sustainability work is based on the UN global goals for sustainable development, it affects all parts of our business and is ongoing. Our work is focused on the safety, wellbeing and development of our staff, the environmental impact of the lifecycle of our products and the conduct of our suppliers. It is also about business ethics, social responsibility and reducing our carbon footprint.  The results of what we achieve are published each year in a public sustainability report, which you can download below.

Since 2011, the AJ Group has been certified and approved according to the international management systems for quality and environment, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. In 2021, AJ Products UK along with nine other AJ Group subsidiaries were also awarded ISO 9001 and 14001 certification. The ISO 9001 quality management system sets out criteria that encompass a strong customer focus, the motivation of top management and continual improvement, whilst the ISO 14001 environmental management system specifies requirements that organisations can use to enhance environmental performance.

Sustainable forestry

With our origins in the densely forested Swedish province of Småland, we have always been close to forests. The AJ Group invests part of its surplus in forests. The forest land owned by the AJ Group is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council ®) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) certified and controlled according to these organisations’ criteria.

The forest has environmental benefits as it captures greenhouse gases. AJ Products’ forest holdings in Sweden and Latvia sequestered almost 33,000 tonnes of CO₂ in 2021 (based on annual growth and the substitution effect on annual felling).

What's more, our furniture factory in Poland is certified as an FSC approved manufacturer, which means that we have chain of custody to ensure that all the timber used in manufacturing our wood products comes from sustainably managed forests.

One of the greatest environmental challenges for businesses globally is reducing transport emissions. At AJ Products, transport is a prioritised environmental factor. Amongst other things, we are taking the following steps to improve our carbon footprint.
  • Shifting transport from our factory in Slovakia to our central warehouse in Sweden from road to rail transport. This has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 62%.
  • Improving our fill rate on both incoming and outgoing shipments so that fewer shipments are required.
  • Focusing on reducing transport damage in order to reduce the number of unnecessary journeys.
